"Thank you for coming to our school to talk to us. You've inspired me, and I found it really useful and helpful. I was quite surprised that two hours could do such a thing!"

Kate

"I am the head Boy at the college that you visited today and think you were truly inspiring. I am determined to do better in my exams and coursework due to your revision guide and it definitely made me realise that I, just a normal lad, can achieve my dreams."

Hayden, aged 15

Books

Self Esteem & Confidence

Jonathan Livingston Seagull – by Richard Bach

I read this book when I was 15 years old. I loved it, firstly because it was short and easy to read, which meant I was able to read it quickly… and that made me feel intelligent!

Secondly, and more importantly, I loved the book because it spoke to me. It’s an inspirational short story that gave me the courage to tread my own path and create my own personal identity, rather than conforming to peer pressure and getting lost in the crown. I think everybody should read it.

It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want To Be – by Paul Arden

Every now and then, a book comes along that changes the way you think and behave. This book did that to me when I was 26 years old. I bought it in Birmingham, and admittedly, I started reading it because I wanted to gain ideas that would help me grow my business. Interestingly, I ended up growing myself!

Notes From A Friend – by Anthony Robbins

This is a how-to guide that every teenager should read. I was given a copy for Christmas in 1999… I only wish I’d received it earlier and read it earlier!

Motivation & Achievement

Think And Grow Rich – by Napoleon Hill

This was the first self-help book I ever read! I was 15 years old at the time, and even though it took me an eternity to read, it changed my life forever.

Losing My Virginity – by Richard Branson

In this book, Sir Richard Branson shares his life story. I read it whilst on holiday when I was 20, and I was spellbound – I think I ignored everyone for 4 days because I was so engrossed in the book!

I couldn’t believe what Richard Branson was like during his youth, and I was amazed by the seemingly impossible challenges he overcame to make his dreams become a reality. If only more people knew that they too can achieve so much.

Do Less, Achieve More – by Chin-Ning Chu
I only read this book recently, but it’s had a big effect on the way that I approach my goals. If only my school teachers had taught me how to do less and achieve more!

Learning & School Grades

The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective Teens – by Sean Covey

I started reading The Seven Habits Of Effective People when I was 17, and I finished it when I was 18! It was a challenging read, but thankfully a teenage version of the book has been released, which makes it much easier to understand! The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is brilliant – It’s a book that I return to time and time again. The principles it contains are rock solid ideas that I believe everyone should learn and live by. In my opinion, this book is full of truth.

Eat That Frog – by Brian Tracy

If you’ve ever found yourself overloaded with work or stressed out because you’ve got so much to do, this book is for you. Eat that Frog taught me lots about how to prioritise my work and get things done.

Lucky Or Smart – by Bo Peabody

This little gem of a book is quick to read and packed of simple ideas that really make a big difference. I enjoyed reading it, and I’m sure you will too.

Stress & Depression

Who Moved My Cheese for Teens – by Dr Spencer Johnson

This is an entertaining short story about four mice. As they respond to the challenges in their daily live, you can’t help but learn valuable things about yourself and those around you. I read this book in my mid-twenties, but it would have been better if I’d read it when I was still at school.

Man’s Search For Meaning – by Viktor E. Frankl

I read this book when I was 18 years old. It moved me and influenced me in ways I never anticipated.

Viktor Frankl was a Jewish man who found himself in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. His personal story and the learning’s he made during those dark days were quite incredible.

Viktor Frankl inspired me. Never again will I allow my self to be a victim, and never again will I give up the only freedom we have – the freedom to choose our thoughts and give meaning to our experiences.

One day I will visit the place where Viktor was a prisoner of war. I hope you read his book and gain as much from it as I did.

The Book of Secrets – by Robert J. Petro

I received this book as a gift from my dad when I was 19. It follows the experiences of a young Mexican as he transitioned towards adulthood.

The author does a great job of pulling together many principles about dealing with experiencing a happy life and achieving success in spite of the obstacles that may cross your path.

I have very fond memories of turning the pages late at night when I was snuggled in my bed! This was a gift that I will always treasure.

Money, Careers & The Future

The Richest Man In Babylon – by George S. Clason

I read this book when I was 18 years old, and I’ve lived by the principles it teaches ever since. If you want to be rich, you simply have to read this book.

Rich Dad Poor Dad – by Robert T. Kiyosaki

Please, please, please read this book if you want to be wealthy. Rich Dad Poor Dad identifies the common mistakes that people make when it comes to money, and it will provide you with a proven plan for becoming rich. I think this stuff should be taught in schools instead of Pythagoras’s Theory.

I Can Make You Rich – by Paul McKenna

Whether you become rich or not will be largely determined by your attitudes and beliefs. In this book, Paul McKenna shows you how to get the mindset for success. I know I’ll use the contents of this book forever.

Relationships & Communication

Instant Rapport – by Michael Brooks

This is the best book I’ve ever read on how to build trust in relationships. I read Instant Rapport when I was 18 years old, and I still use its teachings on a daily basis. If you want to improve your communications and relationship capabilities, you simply have to read this book.

How To Win Friends & Influence People – by Dale Carnegie

This book is filled with practical guidance that some people say is common sense. But I find that the ideas Dale Carnegie shares aren’t very common at all – They just make great sense!

I received a hardback copy of the book when I was attending a personal development seminar at the age of 16. It was a multi-million bestseller several decades before I was even born, and I expect it will still be as relevant as ever 100 years into the future.

I have used the lessons taught in How To Win Friends & Influence People in countless situations throughout my life. On many occasions this knowledge has enabled me to succeed when others doubted my capabilities. Why don’t they teach this stuff in school?

Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus – by John Gray

I used to be incredibly shy and awful at relationships (particularly with girls) when I was a teenager. Then I read this book when I was 19, and lots of things improved for me. John Gray helped me develop a deeper understanding of the different ways that men and women tend to think and behave. This understanding, combined with the strategies in the book, gave me an incredible sense of self-confidence. I’ve never looked back to those doubt filled days – I just hope you gain as much from it as I did.

Health & Sport

It’s Not About The Bike – by Lance Armstrong

What a life story! I’m always cautious about placing someone on a pedestal, because all human beings have their imperfection and make mistake. That said, Lance Armstrong’s autobiographical account of surviving cancer and going on to with the Tour de France is filled with valuable lessons and real life inspiration.

I met Lance just after the turn of the Millennium in Portland (Oregon). He was wonderfully warm, sincere, and incredibly open. What he has already achieved is absolutely sensational. I have great respect for this mountain of a man, and I believe that young people around the world can learn much from his never say die approach to life.

Mastery – by George Leonard

I only read this book recently, but it taught me much about the common mistakes that lots of people make when they look for quick fixes to their problems. There are no short cuts when it comes to establishing good health – You really have to develop good habits that you enjoy doing every day, and this book can show you how to do it.

Slim 4 Life – by Jason Vale

Don’t get me wrong – I’ve never had a problem with my body weight. I read this book because of its subtitle… “Freedom From The Food Trap.” I, like many people have had my unhealthy food addictions. Particularly to things that contain sugar!

This book showed me how to change my unhealthy habits and genuinely enjoy my new routines. Slim 4 Life is largely about the psychology of health. It helped me understand how I’d become conditioned to eat and drink certain things that weren’t good for me. It also introduced me to Juicing – a practice that has become a part of my weekly routine.
I’ve become great friends with Jason over the last 12 years. You might say that he’s my brother from another mother! I’ve never met anyone with more energy, passion, and desire to make a difference in the world.
If you want to know how to stop consuming junk and start enjoying healthy alternatives, please read this or one of Jason’s other books. They are brilliant.

Bullying & Other Personal Problems

Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul – by Jack Canfield & Mark Victor Hansen

I hated reading when I was a child because it used to take me an eternity to finish a book. If only I had discovered Chicken Soup For The Soul at an earlier age!

This book compiles real life inspirational short stories that leave you smiling. I started reading the Chicken Soup books in my teenage years. Completing one positive story as a lay in bed before turning out my lights was the perfect way to end the day and leave me feeling positive about myself.

The Alchemist – by Paulo Coelho

This book is an international best seller – It achieved that acclaim with good reason. The Alchemist is an inspirational story about a young shepherd who sets out on a personal journey to discover treasure in Egypt. The young man’s adventure reveals many lessons that can undoubtedly help you on your life journey.

The Celestine Prophecy – by James Redfield

I remember reading this book when I was living in America at the age of 18. It taught me things that enabled me to be at peace with negative things that had happened in my past. It also awakened my perception to things that happen around us all every day.

After reading Celestine Prophecy I never perceived the world the same way again, and let me tell you, that was a very good thing to happen to me! I’m not exaggerating when I say that I probably wouldn’t have had such a fun filled life had I not read this book.

Behaviour & Discipline

The Way of the Peaceful Warrior – by Dan Millman

This was one of the first books that truly inspired me and affected my approach to daily life. It’s the story of a young man who thought he knew everything and his elder mentor.

I read The Way of The Peaceful Warrior when I was 17 years old and just starting to explore my own personal development. This book grabbed me, held my attention, and changed me (for the better) forever. I love it, and I recommend it to you.

I Can’t Accept Not Trying – by Michael Jordan

This simple and short book gets right to the point. And when Michael Jordan gets to the point, you kind of have to pay attention because he knows what it takes to be successful.

I was 19 years old when consumed these pages, and Michael’s words still echo in my mind on a regular basis. The things is, this book told me things about personal standards, effort, commitment, and determination that many adults had told me before. But this time, because the advice came from Michael Jordan, I paid attention!

The Greatness Guide – by Robin Sharma

This book lives in my bathroom! It’s been there for year. Every now and then, when I sit on the loo, I open it up and read a chapter. Each chapter is only a few pages long, and shares a great idea about how you can take control of your life, before moving quickly onto the next chapter. Why don’t you get a copy and read it while you’re on the loo!

Audio Books

Self Esteem & Confidence

Now Discover Your Strengths – Marcus Buckingham & Donald O. Clifton

What a revelation! This audio book enabled me to learn more about myself. It genuinely changed my view about many things – I loved it!

I believe that self-awareness is an important ingredient for success and happiness in life. As such, young people need to know what they’re good at because this will help them make good career decisions. Unfortunately, most schools haven’t yet evolved to the point where all students are given an opportunity to discover their strengths. Thankfully this recording gives everyone the opportunity to identify their natural strengths, and understand what direction they can take in the future in order to make best use of those strengths.

Motivation & Achievement

The Success Principles – by Jack Canfield

This has to be one of the most thorough audio books I’ve ever listened to on the subject of personal achievement. It’s packed with philosophies and strategies that can help you be happy and successful.

Learning & School Grades

Exam Buster – by Paul McKenna & Michael Breen
I frequently listened to this recording when I was preparing for my exams in school. My grades went up in eight subjects in less than six months! I guess the results speak for themselves!

Stress & Depression

The Soul of Healing Meditations – by Deepak Chopra

This recording is truly magical. I must admit that the first time I listened to it I thought it was a bit weird! But now, I don’t go anywhere without taking The Soul of Healing Meditations on my iPod.

Mastering your emotions is an essential skill to learn, and this guided relaxation programme will lead you into a wonderful state of pure relaxation. It didn’t take long for this recording to become part of my weekly routine. Now my mum uses it, my girlfriend loves it, and I bet you’ll get hooked too!

Money, Careers & The Future

Retire Young Retire Rich – by Robert T. Kiyosaki

I was once told to be careful whose advice you listen to when it comes to money. From that point on I’ve tried to get financial advice from people that are already wealthy because they are likely to know what they’re talking about. Since Robert Kiyosaki is a multi-millionaire and was able to stop working twenty years earlier than most people, I thought he must know what he’s talking about. After listening to his audio book, I’m absolutely certain that he knows what he’s talking about. I just wish this stuff was taught in schools because I think everybody should know about it.

Relationships & Communication

The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People – by Stephen Covey

This is an all-time classic, and essential listening for anyone that wants to experience a fantastic life. I first listened to the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People during my morning workouts when I was 20 years old, and I have revisited the material many times since. It is packed with what I consider to be fundamental concepts that everyone should know, and in my opinion, lead their lives by.

Health & Sport

The Power of Full Engagement – by Tommy Loehr & Tony Schwartz

I listen to this audio book every year and always learn something valuable. Time after time I meet students that want to achieve the best results (and gain all the rewards that go with that), but they don’t give the best of themselves on a daily basis. This recording deals with that issue, and many others. I recommend it to you.

Bullying & Other Personal Problems

The Power of Intention – by Dr Wayne Dyer
I believe that young person should learn how to use their personal focus to deal with problems and achieve their goals. This audio book will enable you to understand the power of intention, and show you how to use this universal law to achieve great things.

Behaviour & Discipline

How To Be A Complete And Utter Failure In Life, Work, And Everything – by Steve McDermott

The title of this audio book made me chuckle, but the content made me think. It’s full of sound advice that every teenager should know… especially those who are getting themselves into trouble.

Movies

This is Kevin’s current Top 10 Films for teenagers – They will make you laugh, cry, learn… and they might even inspire you to improve something in your life.

1. It’s A Wonderful Life

This may be a black and white film, but it is truly brilliant. I first watched It’s A Wonderful Life at the cinema with a group of friends shortly after the Millennium, and I’ve watched it at least once every year since then. You can’t help getting emotionally involved, and if your anything life me, you’ll cry with happiness… and by the end, you’ll be a better person!

2. Freedom Writers

This is an incredible story based on real life events that happened shortly after the Los Angeles riots in the 1990s. I remember watching the news unfold on TV, but I wasn’t aware of what was happening to young people in LA’s schools at that time. I was inspired by what one newly qualified teacher was prepared to do to help her students make progress in their lives. I bet you’ll be inspired too.

3. Step Up

I watched this movie at the cinema, and bought it as soon as it came out on DVD! This is a great story about how a teenager from the wrong side of town pursues his dream and deals with the obstacles in his path. The music is brilliant, the dancing is fantastic, and the various highs and lows keep you glued to the screen. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

4. Stars Wars IV: A New Hope

I watched this film in my childhood and I think it’s absolutely awesome! The Star Wars films are now legendary, and with good reason too. They’re packed with great action scenes, but for me, the ideals of the Jedi and the morals in this epic tale are five-star quality.

5. Slumdog Millionaire

This is a very moving story about impoverished young people who grow up in India. Yes, Slumdog Millionaire is fiction with a happy ending, but it brings to life many of the tragic things I’ve witnessed through my own eyes as I’ve travelled the world. I just wish that more people were not only aware of the problems portrayed in the film, but greater action was taken to eradicate them from existence. Maybe this film will inspire you and others to help those that need it most.

6. Coach Carter

The world is crowded with adults that moan about the attitude of young people. Every now and again someone stands up and does something about it. Every young person should have a Coach Carter in their life to help them understand what’s really important in life. The fact that this movie was inspired by a true story made it all the more poignant for me. I hope you get as much out of it as I did.

7. Good Will Hunting

If you haven’t seen it yet, you have to watch this movie. In every community I visit, I find characters like the one that Matt Damon plays in Good Will Hunting. In fact, I’d go as far to say that the world is filled with brilliant people that are gifted and talented. Unfortunately, and all too often, these brilliant people prevent themselves from fulfilling their potential. This film deals with that issue head on. It motivated me to get over my problems and pursue my dreams – I hope it inspires you too.

8. Forrest Gump

I watched Forrest Gump when I was 16 years old, and I reckon it’s one of the best feel-good movies of all time. Forrest Gump is the fictional life-story of a character that experiences more in his life than you could possibly imagine. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry… and if you’re like me, it will make you think about your own life in a new positive light.

9. Remember The Titans

I love this film because it’s based on a true story of an American high school football team that has to deal with racism, prejudice and pressure if they’re going to achieve their aspirations. If you’ve got the guts of these guys you’ll go a long way in life.

10. Miracle On 34th Street

This is possibly the best Christmas movie of all time. I watch it every year whilst wrapping gifts for my family and friends! It really doesn’t matter whether you celebrate Christmas or not, because Miracle On 34th Street isn’t about religion… This is a heartwarming story about the goodness in people and the breakthroughs we can have when we look at the world differently.

A Few Things To Think About

I just think happiness is what makes you pretty. Period. Happy people are beautiful.
